Elvis!

The longest haul of the week was today. Over 800 miles from Armadillo, TX to Tulepo, Ms. We drove alllll day long through Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Tennessee, and now in Mississippi. Whew! We found dunner take out at Olive Garden and some beers which were well deserved. To round out our day, Elvis was chillin in the hotel lobby! We HAD to get our pictures taken with him.

Bonsai is adjusting much better. She's such a good girl! We have been bringing her in to the hotels first in her carrier and then bringing the rest of our things in next. Tonight when I came up to the door with the final load I was able to see her cage from the window. She was ROCKING in it just like a little Tasmanian Devil. It was really funny! Definitely becoming quite the road kitty....

Tomorrow we have the last 600 miles to go and then we will be in James Island at Crabby's house. We are super stoked to have been able to make this drive in 4 days so we have all day Saturday to let our road flattened hineys re-inflate :) Really, car butt is in full force!

Wiiiiiind!

Holy Moly it was windy today for the entire drive. We left the uber busy Grand Canyon around 7am. There were so many people there from all over the world. Mom was getting pissed at the German and Asian people pushing us in the buffet line for breakfast.... I told her that's how they are and YES it can be VERY annoying!

I drove the first 7 hours of I-40. Nothing, nothing, nothing. Just semis and wind.
Lots of wind. Dust and tumbleweeds greeted us around every corner through the vast desert. I didn't take this route coming out west so I didn't really have an idea of how deserted it is. It was cool though. Mom and I chilled and told jokes to pass the time in between Leslie and the Ly's and Bluegrass on the radio. Mom took over for the last 4 hours from Albuquerque to Armadillo (really Amarillo), TX where we are staying for the night.

We was surprised to find that there are wind turbines in Texas but no where else. The Socialist said "we could have energy for FREE!!!"., the Capitalist said "we could SELL it!!!". Can you guess who said what??? Whatever our use, we both agreed that there was a lot of wind power being wasted in most of that desert. I have no idea why it's unharnessed, seems pretty wasteful to us.

We got to the hotel we thought we had reserved and there was only someone staying there by the name of Ronald Wortham! I know that there is a Wortham Center for the Arts in Houston, but I didn't think there were a lot of distant relatives of ours here. I guess that is a good vibe! Anyway that hotel didn't have our resso which created some unneeded tension in the car after such a long drive. I had a cigarette while Mom went in to check in to a place around the corner. All is good.

Bonsai is not really eating and I had to buy baby Tylenol with a dropper top. I've been forcing her to drink water with it which she is obviously NOT stoked on. I even bought her some tuna which she is still sketchy on. Now we're in yet another strange place and she is hiding behind the bed. She did pee once yesterday so that was a good sign if a small one. Last night she went crazy around 2am yowling in the hotel room. She was all over the place meowing and running about. At one point she jumped from the bed to the top of a curtain which was almost ceiling high. She hit the floor and didn't try that one again. I gave her a 1/2 & 1/2 that we had "borrowed" from the pizza joint which she lapped up happily. Eventually she quieted down and I found her hidden in a drawer (one of her favorite spots to hide) this morning. We're a little worried about her but know that she IS a cat and this is totally strange for her. I think she's going to be just fine once we are settled.

We were going to split the trip up to end up in Memphis tomorrow night, which would leave us with another 10-11 hour drive on Friday but we decided that it would probably be better to get more of it out of the way tomorrow, then we can chill more in Chuck when we get there. So we'll probably stay in Tupelo, Mississippi tomorrow night, which is funny since this is the point where on my drive west at 2am I got behind the wheel and ended up driving all night through Oklahoma. I remember that sunrise like it was yesterday :)

Kare, Thanks for taking care of your "little brothers"
love
mom

Last night was a blast! One final round of friends, booze and poker! Since I had an early morning drive, I had to go to bed at 3:30am. I just didn’t want the fun to end. Crashed on the couch and woke up at 7ish. Mom was already up, Tylenol in her, and ready to go... it was HER idea to do the lemon drop shots last night, not mine. We headed out and hit the road. First stop, McDonalds a.k.a. hangover heaven for some breakfast sammies.

Onwards to The Grand Canyon... Bonsai is handling her new situation like the Rock Star cat that she is. She talked a lot in the beginning about how weird this all is but has since adjusted. We have been keeping the door to her carrier open and she has explored the car a bit. Mostly she chills boat sytlie in the back, which is good since it’s HOT out here!

When we stopped for lunch it was 113F in Needles, CA. This was our first try with taking the mini into a place with us since there was no way we could leave her in the car in that heat. I just carried her in inside her Kennel Cab and set her next to us in Taco Smell. No one seemed to mind or notice really. So it was all good.

When we got back into the car we were getting situated to drive, Mom’s turn. I noticed a TB employee taking a smoke break in her car with the door open. We were both looking down in the car and when I looked up I couldn’t see out of any of the windows! A huge funnel of pebbles, sand and dirt had cycloned right over us. The TB employee didn’t budge. In fact she didn’t even close her car door. It only lasted a second but it came out of nowhere. I figured if she wasn’t bolting we were fine. It wasn’t like it was a tornado or anything, I’ve seen them before out in the distance but I don’t think I’ve even been through one. It was pretty cool.

The 40 is hot and pretty desolate. Lots of semi’s and other random cars. I haven’t been out here since when I first moved out to Cali. Lots of time to think and look at tumbleweeds. I’m pretty tired from last night’s activities but am stoked to see the Canyon which I’ve flown over so many times.

Awesome

Yet another reminder of the amazing the people I have been surrounded by out here... a few friends, a few beers and good ole Texas Hold 'em -but not until we figured out how to Tetris all my possessions into the container. We told both hilarious and very bad jokes. We laughed about Captain Keno's. I learned that my friend stashes his booze in a dead teddy bear behind his desk. Can't beat it!!!

You guys rock :)

Wow, this is harder than I thought it would be! I've lived out here for 6 years and have accumulated a ton of possessions. I've always believed in the temporary, that nothing is forever, but wow it's not easy to make these choices. Not only am I moving my life, clothes, books, SHOES, etc, but I'm also moving my business! I have a lot of art supplies, jewelry bench, TOOLS.... It all has to fit into one big box. Kinda crazy how you have to make decisions about what to take, what to leave behind. All afternoon I've been living on the brink of a crazy panic attack. But I'm still feeling strong, keepin it together.

I think I'm leaving my bed. My dresser might have to stay behind too. But whatever, they're just things. Makes you wonder, what is important to YOU? What really matters?

It's here. And yes, it will ALL fit!
